Maryland Senate candidate Angela Alsobrooks honors Kamala Harris at Democratic Convention

Angela Alsobrooks celebrates mentorship from Kamala Harris during DNC address - Angela Alsobrooks speaks on 14-year friendship with Kamala Harris at Democratic National Convention

Angela Alsobrooks, Maryland’s Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate, emphasized her long-standing mentorship with Vice President Kamala Harris during her speech at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday. Alsobrooks, 53, has known Harris for over 14 years, first learning about her criminal justice reforms through a 2009 Essence magazine profile. At the time, Alsobrooks was running for state’s attorney in Prince George’s County. During her DNC remarks, she praised Harris’ policies and defended her against former President Donald Trump.

Alsobrooks, who aims to become Maryland’s first Black senator, faces a challenging race against former Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican who left office in 2023 with a 77% approval rating.

Earlier this year, Alsobrooks achieved a significant victory in the Democratic primary, defeating Rep. David Trone by more than 10 points. Despite being heavily outspent, Alsobrooks’ campaign capitalized on Trone’s missteps, including his comment that she would need “training wheels” in the Senate.

While Maryland has leaned Democratic for decades—Republicans haven’t won a Senate seat there in over 40 years—Hogan’s entry into the race has heightened the stakes. His strong bipartisan appeal presents a formidable challenge for Alsobrooks as Democrats fight to keep Sen. Ben Cardin’s seat and maintain control of the Senate.
